The Finger Lakes are a pattern of lakes in the west-central section of Upstate New York in the United States. The lakes originated as a series of northward-flowing streams, further sculpted by the continental glaciers of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. Many creeks and streams, interspersed by numerous waterfalls, traverse steep gorges to feed the lakes with water from rain and snowmelt.
