The clouds became progressively thicker as sunset approached one autumn afternoon on Beebe Lake on the Cornell University campus in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, denying me the sunset colors in the sky that I had been hoping for. However, just before the sun sank below the horizon, a shaft of light found its way between the horizon and the clouds and illuminated the fall foliage across the lake. The dramatic and unusual lighting conditions intensified and emphasized the already vibrant fall colors in this focused area, underneath the dramatic skies of the approaching rainstorm. Color-wise, this image is very close to how it appeared right out of the camera, with minor adjustments to light balance and contrast.
